Where the elephants never stop coming.
Tarangire occupies 2,850 km² of the Rift Valley floor south of Lake Manyara. In the dry season, it becomes one of Africa's most concentrated wildlife areas, as the Tarangire River — one of the few permanent water sources — draws animals from across a 20,000 km² ecosystem.
The elephant population of approximately 4,000 is the Northern Circuit's largest. In peak dry season, herds of 200 to 500 animals move between the river and the baobab woodland in a constant, slow procession of extraordinary scale.
Tarangire is the only Northern Circuit park that permits night game drives. The nocturnal ecosystem — porcupine, genet, honey badger, African wildcat, serval, and frequently leopard — is visible only after dark. GAPI includes at least one night drive in every Tarangire itinerary.
Lameck Stanslaus is GAPI's Tarangire specialist with eleven years of daily observation. His knowledge of 550+ bird species makes Tarangire essential for birding-focused expeditions.
"Lameck positioned the vehicle 15 metres from the water's edge. We waited 20 minutes. The herd arrived: 220 elephants drinking in complete silence."
