The Beginning

Seven years of seeing what was missing.

Gapi Stephano began his guiding career in 2015 with one of Arusha's largest safari operators. At twenty-two years old, he entered the safari industry with a deep curiosity about Tanzania's wildlife and landscapes. The Northern Circuit quickly became his classroom. Long days in the Serengeti, early mornings in the Ngorongoro Crater, and countless hours tracking wildlife taught him lessons that no guidebook could provide.

Over the next decade, Gapi worked with some of Tanzania's most respected safari companies, guiding travelers from every corner of the world. His reputation grew through consistency, professionalism, and an exceptional ability to read the bush. Guests frequently requested him by name, returned for additional safaris, and recommended him to friends and family. Yet with every season, he became increasingly aware of the limitations that often come with large-scale safari operations.

"Years of guiding taught me that the best safari experiences are personal. Guests don't remember how big a company is. They remember the guide who understood what they wanted to see, who knew where to be at the right moment, and who made them feel connected to this incredible landscape."

After years of experience in the field, Gapi developed a clear vision for a different kind of safari company—one built around flexibility, personal attention, and genuine local expertise. Rather than managing large numbers of guests, he wanted to create journeys designed around each traveler's interests, pace, and expectations.

In 2015, Gapi Founded GAPI Africa Safaris. His first major investment was a safari-ready Toyota Land Cruiser, purchased to ensure that every guest could enjoy the comfort, reliability, and freedom that private safaris require. Soon after launching the company, his first bookings began arriving through referrals from former guests who trusted his experience and guiding style. Many of those guests have since returned to Tanzania to travel with him again.

Today, GAPI Africa Safaris combines years of professional guiding experience with a commitment to personalized service. Every itinerary is carefully planned, every journey is guided by local knowledge, and every safari is built around the belief that unforgettable experiences come from being in the right place, at the right time, with the right guide.

The Team

Building a team of scientists who host.

One of the first priorities after establishing GAPI Africa Safaris was building a team that shared the same values of professionalism, local expertise, and exceptional guest service. Having spent years working alongside talented guides throughout Tanzania's Northern Circuit, Gapi knew that the quality of a safari depends greatly on the people leading it.

Lameck Stanslaus joined the team with extensive guiding experience across Tanzania's premier wildlife destinations. With a background in Natural Resources Management and a strong passion for conservation, he is widely recognized for his deep knowledge of birdlife, wildlife behavior, and ecosystem dynamics. His ability to interpret the subtle details of the bush transforms every game drive into an educational and unforgettable masterclass.

John Mazigwa brings elite expertise as a mountain and cultural specialist, having led hundreds of expeditions up Mount Kilimanjaro and introduced travelers from around the world to Tanzania's rich cultural heritage. His deep-rooted relationships with local communities, mastery of traditional customs, and technical knowledge of trekking routes add an unrivaled, immersive dimension to every adventure.

Richard Mbuya brings a master-level understanding of the Serengeti ecosystem, honed through an illustrious career of independent guiding. His deep expertise in tracking wildlife movement patterns, decoding predator behavior, and predicting seasonal migrations elevates him as a premier asset to the team. Guests consistently praise his infinite patience, sharp observation skills, and his tactical ability to perfectly position vehicles for rare, unhurried wildlife viewing opportunities.

Together, the guiding team brings decades of combined experience across Tanzania's Northern Circuit. While each guide offers a different area of expertise, they share the same commitment to safety, professionalism, conservation awareness, and delivering authentic safari experiences. Their collective knowledge and dedication continue to shape the reputation of GAPI Africa Safaris and inspire guests to return year after year.

The Conservation Programme

Conservation. Community. Responsibility.

GAPI Africa Safaris was founded with a simple belief: the future of safari tourism depends on the long-term health of the landscapes, wildlife, and communities that make these experiences possible. Conservation is not separate from tourism—it is the foundation upon which every safari is built.

After more than a decade guiding throughout Tanzania's Northern Circuit, Gapi Stephano has witnessed firsthand the importance of protecting the ecosystems that attract travelers from around the world. From the Serengeti's vast plains to the Ngorongoro Highlands and the baobab-dotted landscapes of Tarangire, these places require ongoing stewardship and responsible tourism practices.

"Every safari depends on healthy ecosystems and thriving communities. Our responsibility is to ensure that tourism contributes positively to both, today and for generations to come."

Gapi Stephano · Founder

As the company grows, GAPI Africa Safaris is committed to supporting conservation initiatives, promoting responsible travel, and working with local communities whose livelihoods are closely connected to Tanzania's natural heritage. These partnerships are an important part of the company's long-term vision.

Our goal is simple: create exceptional safari experiences while helping preserve the landscapes and wildlife that make them possible.

Today

A New Company. The Same Commitment.

Since its establishment in 2015, GAPI Africa Safaris has been built on a simple principle: exceptional safari experiences are created through expertise, personal attention, and genuine passion for Tanzania's wilderness. While the company is still in the early stages of its journey, its foundation is built upon more than a decade of professional guiding experience across the Northern Circuit.

Every safari is personally overseen by Gapi Stephano and supported by a team of experienced guides who share a commitment to excellence, safety, and responsible tourism. Rather than focusing on high volumes of travelers, GAPI Africa Safaris prioritizes carefully planned private journeys that allow guests to experience Tanzania at their own pace.

The company's growth continues to be driven by trust, personal recommendations, and the relationships built with travelers from around the world. Many guests choose GAPI Africa Safaris because they are looking for a more personal and authentic connection to Tanzania's wildlife, landscapes, and cultures.

GAPI Africa Safaris was not built overnight; it is the culmination of decades spent on the red dirt tracks of the Serengeti and the steep walls of Ngorongoro. Founded on generations of local knowledge and an unyielding reverence for Tanzania’s wild spaces, we are intentionally small, hyper-focused, and built to last. We don’t measure our success in the volume of vehicles we send out, but in the precision of our science, the depth of our guiding, and the quiet, breathtaking moments we curate for those who trust us with their journey.
